A full day course for industry personnel working with Surface Agreements and the applicable legislation governing the rights of the surface owners and third parties. Upon completion, land agents will have a basic understanding of the legislative law applicable to Surface Agreements and knowledge of where to research the legislation to answer day to day questions.  Additionally, we will cover what steps need to be taken to compel access to land in the event that a Surface Agreement cannot be reached. 

What:

This course is for the purposes of learning the applicable Statues and Regulations that govern freehold surface land agreements and the execution of such documentation. The course will include a review of the Land Agents Licensing Act, Land Titles Act, Surface Rights Act, Dower Act, Devolution of Real Property Act, Agricultural and Recreational Land Ownership Act, Law of Property Act and a number of other statues in force in the Province of Alberta that the land agent should be aware of.

Registration Fee includes beverages and snacks.

Allison Sears

Allison Sears is an associate in the Advocacy Group in Stikeman Elliott"s Calgary office.  Her practice focuses primarily on energy regulation and environmental matters.  Ms. Sears represents clients in relation to the regulatory and environmental aspects of oil and gas electricity developments, including facility approval proceedings for wells, pipelines, power plants, hydroelectric generation facilities, and transmission lines.  She also represents electric and gas utilities in rate regulation and tariff matters, and has considerable experience in land rights acquisition and expropriation matters.  With respect to environmental matters, in addition to advising clients on licensing requirements and enforcement issues, Ms. Sears has expertise in the areas of remediation and reclamation of contaminated sites.

Ms. Sears appears on behalf of both Applicants and Interveners before numerous regulators including the Alberta Utilities Commission, the Alberta Energy Regulatory (formerly, the Energy Resources Conservation Board), the Surface Rights Board, the Land Compensation Board, the Northwest Territories Public Utilities Board, the Yukon Utilities Board and the Yukon Water Board.

With a background in commercial litigation, Ms. Sears has also appeared before all levels of court in Alberta, including in regulatory appeal matters.

Kurtis Reed

Kurtis Reed is an associate in the Calgary office of Stikeman Elliott whose practice focuses on corporate matters, mergers and acquisitions, energy and corporate finance and securities.  Mr. Reed is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Calgary Bar Association and the Law Society of Alberta.
